Basil

Ocimum basilicum

Summary:

Basil is a fragrant, leafy herb that’s not just great in the kitchen but also boasts a surprising array of health benefits. Known for its vibrant flavor, basil is a common ingredient in Italian, Mediterranean, and Southwest Asian cuisine. But beyond its culinary uses, basil has been celebrated for centuries for its medicinal properties. It’s packed with antioxidants, anti-inflammatory compounds, and even has antimicrobial effects. Whether fresh or dried, basil can enhance your meals and your wellness routine.

You might need basil if . . .

  • You’re looking for a natural digestive aid to help with bloating or indigestion.
  • You want to reduce inflammation or soothe joint discomfort.
  • You’re feeling stressed and want a natural, calming remedy.
  • You’re trying to boost your immune system or fight off a cold.

Benefits of Basil …
Basil isn’t just a delicious herb for pesto. It’s also full of health benefits.

  • Antioxidant powerhouse: Basil contains compounds such as flavonoids and polyphenols that combat oxidative stress, thereby helping to protect the body’s cells from damage. A 2014 study in Food Chemistry highlights basil’s impressive antioxidant properties, which are great for skin health and aging.
  • Anti-inflammatory effects: Basil has natural anti-inflammatory compounds that can reduce inflammation in the body. If you suffer from inflammation or joint discomfort, basil may help soothe some of that discomfort. Research published in the Journal of Medicinal Food (2013) supports this, showing that basil helps lower inflammation markers in the body.
  • Supports digestive health: If you struggle with bloating or indigestion, basil could be your go-to remedy. It has been traditionally used to ease digestion, reduce gas, and calm the stomach. You can enjoy basil in meals or steep it in hot water for a soothing tea after meals.
  • Stress relief: Basil has adaptogenic properties, which means it can help your body cope with stress. It supports your adrenal glands, helping to regulate cortisol, the primary stress hormone. Adding a bit of basil to your routine can help promote relaxation and even improve sleep quality.
  • Antibacterial & antiviral: Basil has natural antibacterial and antiviral properties, making it an excellent herb to help boost your immune system, especially during cold and flu season. Studies have shown that basil extracts can inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria and viruses. So, if you’re feeling under the weather, basil may be just what you need.

Common ways to use Basil
Basil is incredibly versatile—not just for flavor but also for health!

  • In your cooking: Add fresh basil to salads, pasta dishes, sandwiches, or even smoothies. It’s the key ingredient in pesto (yum!) and adds a delightful flavor to many dishes. You can also sprinkle it on soups, pizzas, or roasted vegetables for an extra kick.
  • Basil tea: Steep fresh basil leaves (or dried basil) in hot water for a soothing tea that’s perfect for digestion. It’s a great way to relax after a meal and reduce bloating or discomfort. Add a touch of honey or lemon for an extra burst of flavor.
  • Essential oils: Basil essential oil is used in aromatherapy to promote relaxation and reduce stress. You can diffuse it in your home or apply it topically (diluted with a carrier oil) to help with muscle tension or headaches.
  • Tinctures and supplements: If you prefer a more concentrated form, you can find basil in tincture form and use it as a supplement. These can support stress management and reduce inflammation, especially if you don’t want to incorporate them into your cooking but want to reap their medicinal benefits.
